Meikyo

明鏡

The name Meikyo (or 明鏡 in Japanese) means ‘Bright Mirror’ (or ‘Polished Mirror’). This name alludes to the beginning of the kata, when the hands are held up in front of one’s face as if looking into a (bright) mirror. This kata also contaions several duplicated (or mirroring) techniques. In the video embedded below (recorded on 26 June 2023), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national runner-up from the Netherlands, performs this Bright Mirror kata of Shotokan ( 松濤館 ) Karate-do ( 空手道 ).
