Sochin

壯鎭

The name Sochin (or 壯鎭 in Japanese) means ‘Tranquil Force’, or ‘Preserve the Peace’. It was probably derived from Dragon style Kung Fu. It was taught in the Naha-te school in Okinawa by Seisho Arakaki (1840 – 1918). Later on, Yoshitaka “Gigo” Funakoshi (1906 – 1957), son of Gichin Funakoshi (1968 – 1957), modified it slightly. In the video embedded below (recorded on 19 June 2023), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national runner-up from the Netherlands, performs this Preserve the Peace kata of Shotokan ( 松濤館 ) Karate-do ( 空手道 ).
