Ippon-Kumite (or 一本組手 in Japanese) means ‘one step sparring’. Typically, this involves a standard way of responding to a single attack technique. Next, Geri-Waza (or 蹴り伎 in Japanese) means ‘kicking techniques’. In the video embedded below (recorded on 3 Februari 2025), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national runner-up from the Netherlands, performs five one step sparring defences of Shotokan ( 松濤館 ) Karatedo ( 空手道 ), each with a kicking technique.
